Old Apple and Mac computers

The primary goal of any educational institution is to educate & prepare its students for the real world upon graduation. Along with the educational subjects, it is essential that students learn to use the same tools that are used by colleges, universities & business organizations.

Even though about 90% of businesses in the US are using IBM compatible PCs, it is unfortunate that students in many schools are still using old Apple and MAC computers. The roots of this nationwide problem extend back to early 90s when IBM compatible PCs were running on DOS operating system. DOS computers had text based (command line) user interface, which was very difficult to use. The Apple Computer Inc. introduced the Windows based computers in the market. Since Windows Graphical User Interface (GUI) was easy to use (compared to DOS), Mac computers became very popular, especially among students. Even though Macs were more expensive, people paid more money because they were user-friendly

When Microsoft introduced the Windows operating system on IBM compatible PCs, (and Apple Computer Inc. lost its court battle against Microsoft in 1993), Mac computers lost their edge over IBM desktops. While the prices of IBM compatibles kept on dropping, Mac prices remained high. With the result, over the years, Apple lost its market share. Today, less than 10% customers are using Mac computers but many schools are still using old Macs. Many schools are considering switching over to IBM compatible PCs, but high cost of conversion is keeping them from doing so.
